Elevator buttons are among the most frequently touched surfaces in public buildings. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they became a visible point of anxiety—small interfaces shared by hundreds of people each day.
AUVED (Automatic Ultraviolet Elevator Disinfector) is a retrofit sanitation system designed to disinfect elevator buttons without modifying the elevator’s internal circuitry. Using OpenCV, the system visually detects button actuation from outside the panel, allowing it to operate independently of the elevator’s electronics.
Two stepper-motor-driven linear sliders position UV lamps precisely over selected buttons, delivering targeted disinfection only where contact has occurred. By combining computer vision, motion control, and noninvasive installation, AUVeD explores how public interfaces can become safer through intelligent automation.
The project was awarded First Prize at the Shanghai Adolescents Science and Technology Innovation Competition.
